Los equipos profesionales son motivo de orgullo para una ciudad. Los equipos victoriosos traen no sólo orgullo, sino que a veces ellos ayudan a unir a una ciudad que quizás se vea cargada de deudas, luchas políticas o conflictos laborales. Todo eso se echa  a un lado para vitorear al equipo local. Cuando vitoreamos a nuestros equipos predilectos en cualquier deporte, lo podemos hacer por muchas razones, y muy raramente porque pensamos que podemos jugar a ese nivel. Admiramos a los atletas que han desarrollado sus habilidades a tal nivel que forman parte de un equipo profesional. Y no hay nada comparable a unirse a la celebración con esos atletas en sus momentos de triunfo. Ellos nos rescatan de nuestras preocupaciones mundanas, elevan nuestros ánimos y hacen que olvidemos nuestros problemas durante un juego. Quizás hasta nos hagan sentir mejor por toda una temporada.

La escena deportiva en Filadelfia es en este momento una de las mejores en años. Los Broad Street Bullies jugaron hace más de tres décadas. En los años desde entonce hemos tenido algún éxito con los Sixers, los Eagles bajo Dick Vermeil, o los Phillies que  realmente ganaron una serie mundial. Tuvimos años maravillosos con Mike Schmidt y el Doctor J. Al comienzo de cada temporada nosotros comenzamos a esperar otra vez. Siempre creemos que nuestros equipos llegaran a las finales. Los expertos no quizás convengan, pero esperaremos contra toda la evidencia porque muchos de nosotros recordamos a Kate Smith y los Fliers.

Sabemos que podemos ganar porque lo hemos hecho antes. Hemos llegado a ese punto otra vez y y empezamos a sospechar que la suerte nos favorece en el hockey y el béisbol. Nuestros equipos ganan y tenemos un nuevo conjunto de grandes nombres para cantar victoriosos. Gagne o Victorino señalarán lel camino a la victoria. Nuestro equipo de béisbol parece a veces imbatible y aún cuando pierden sabemos que regresarán al día siguiente con más cuadrangulares y lanzadores más admirables. Nuestro equipo del hockey gana juegos. Y decimos nuestros equipos porque tenemos un sentido de formar parte de la empresa nada más que por comprar un boleto. Compartimos con ellos la emoción de la victoria y la angustia de la derrota, que fue uno de nuestras frases predilectas de las mejores transmisiones de ABC. Esperamos esos día de partidos y vemos el resto como días en blanco en el calendario.

Gane o pierda nuestro equipo, el hockey termina pronto. Pero no hay muhos días aburridos en el próximo mes porque tenemos el Mundial de Fútbol este verano. Estados Unidos competirá y eso añade a nuestro interés. Sin embargo, en esta competencia, aunque vitoreemos al equipo local sólo queremos ver gran fútbol.

En el Mundial difrutamos solo con mirar la competencia--el desempeño de grandes atletas en su mejor forma. Adicionalmente, si nuestros equipos predilectos van a las finales, pues muy bien, pero, celebraremos sin importar que equipos compitan. Este es un acontecimiento mundial y se trata del juego y nada más.

Sports and Life

Teams bring pride to a city. Victorious teams bring not only pride, but sometimes they help to unite a city that might be mired in debt, political conflict or labor struggles. All the stress is set aside to cheer for  the home team.  When we cheer for our favorite teams in any sport, we can do it for many reasons, and very rarely because we think we can play the game. We do admire the athletes who have developed their skills well enough to be on a professional team. And there is nothing like joining those athletes in their moments of triumph. They rescue us from our mundane concerns, they lift our spirits and make us forget our troubles for the duration of a game. They might even make us feel better for a whole season.

The sports scene in Philadelphia right now is one of the best in years. The Broad Street Bullies played more than three decades ago. In the intervening years we have had some degree of success with the Sixers, the Eagles under Dick Vermeil, or the Phillies who actually won a World Series. There were wonderful years with Mike Schmidt and Doctor J. At the start of each season we start to hope again. We always believe that our teams will go all the way. The experts might disagree, but we will hope against all evidence because many of us remember Kate Smith and the Flyers.

We know we can win because we have done it before. We are there again and we have that familiar feeling that things are going our way in hockey and baseball. Our teams are winning and we have a whole new set of great names to cheer on to victory. Gagne or Victorino will point the way to victory. 

Our baseball team sometimes seems unbeatable and even when they lose we know they will be back the next day with more homeruns and more admirable pitching.  Our hockey team is winning games. And we keep saying our teams because we have a sense of being part of the whole enterprise even if all we do is buy a ticket. We share with them the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, which was one of our favorite phrases from the best broadcasts of ABC.  We look forward to those days in which they play and look at the off days as blank days on the calendar.

Win or lose our team, hockey will be over soon. But we are not going to have too many boring days in the next month or so because we have the summer World Cup coming up. The United States will be competing and that adds to our interest. However, in this competition, even if we cheer for the home team we just want to see great soccer.

In the World Cup we will just enjoy watching the competition, the performance of great athletes at the top of their game. Additionally, if our favorite teams go to the final, great, but we will celebrate no matter what teams compete. This is a world event and it is all about the game
