The South American teams have dominated this world cup.  Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay in the quarter finals next to Spain.  Argentina defeated Mexico in the quarterfinals and Spain waved good-bye to Portugal.

Several matches have been dull.  They blame the ball, but we have seen in the most recent play that the complaints might be valid although some players seem to have adjusted.  For those who already departed there was no time to adjust to a ball that most times just flies above the goal and leaves the strikers looking for it in front of the goal. When the wing serves it flies closer to the sky than the turf. The problem with that excuse is that all are using the same ball and Portugal scored 7 goals against North Korea, the people of the red star, not to be confused with the other team.  South Korea played very well but was not able to deal with the skill of the Uruguayans.  Germany defeated England 4 to 1 showing that they were had become used to the light weight ball.

It seems that the low scores cannot be explained by the weird ball but rather by the way soccer is being played nowadays.  It is a defensive set up in which the players just wait for the long ball hoping to kick it into the goal.  The ones that carry the ball with their feet, with art and grace are often attacked as in a wrestling match.  And there is too much physical contact permitted by the referees.

Although the physical play has always existed, it seems that it is a lot harder and more frequent in this world cup in which the refereeing has been mediocre and at times, as in the case of the U.S. goal that was annulled, disastrous.  The introduction of technology is being discussed, to be used in the way other sports use it.  If there is the possibility of a wrong call, it can be reviewed by means of a video recorded by the omnipresent cameras.  Seeing the play from several angles referees can judge with more precision.

The low scores, ties at nil, and one to one impacted our interest in the world one.  For the lovers of soccer a tie can be a thousand times more interesting than a game in which one of the teams dominates the match completely.  We just have to think about the game between Portugal and Korea.

The shape and weight of the ball may play a part in the results, and that is something that will change in future cups. For now, we celebrate that the South American teams have learned with so much success how to control it.  The case is that the European game is more physical, the Germans and the Danish are taller.  The English and the Slavs play harder.  The reality is that in soccer, now and perhaps always, the ones who dominate are those who know, the jugglers that turn any move in an act of magic and inspiration.  Higuain, one of the good of Argentinians stands at six feet (meter eighty), but Lionel Massi, considered by many the best footballer in the world at the age of 23, stands at only 5 feet and 7 inches (1.70 meters).  Furthermore, Maradona and Pele are not tall.

On July 11 we will know who won the crown. We believe the decision is between Argentina and Brazil. But no matter who wins we already have a large inventory of great moments that we can relive until the next cup in Brazil.

Hegemonía en el Fútbol

Los equipos sudamericanos han dominado este mundial. Brasil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay en los cuartos de final junto a España. Argentina derrotó a México en los octavos de final y España le dijo adiós a Portugal.

Varios de los encuentros han estado deslucidos. Le echan la culpa al balón, pero según hemos visto en los juegos más recientes puede tener validez la queja aunque ya se van acostumbrando algunos jugadores. Para los que ya se fueron no hubo tiempo de acostumbrarse a un balón que la mayor parte de las veces sale volando por encima del arco y deja a los goleadores esperando frente al arco cuando el centro del puntero pasa más cerca del cielo que de la tierra. El problema con esa excusa es que todos están usando el mismo balón y Portugal metió 7 goles contra Corea del Norte, los de la estrella roja para no confundirnos. Corea del Sur jugó muy bien pero no pudo con la pericia de los uruguayos. Alemania derrotó a Inglaterra 4 a 1 demostrando que ellos si se acostumbraron al peso ligero del balón.

Tal parece que los bajos marcadores no se deben tanto al balón sino al modo como se está jugando al fútbol en nuestros días. Es un juego defensivo en el cual se espera nada más que agarrar la pelota con un largo pase para ponerla en la red. Los que llevan la bola en sus pies con arte y gracia se ven atacados como en la lucha libre. Y hay demasiado contacto físico permitido por los jueces.

Si bien siempre ha existido el juego duro, tal parece que es mucho más duro y más frecuente en este mundial en el cual el arbitraje ha sido mediocre y a veces, como en el caso del gol de Estados Unidos que se anuló, espantoso. Se habla ahora de introducir la nueva técnica que ya se usa en otros deportes. Si se considera que hay un error se puede revisar la jugada por medio del video tomado por las omnipresentes cámaras. Viendo la jugada desde varios ángulos se facilita juzgar con más precisión.

Los bajos marcadores, de cero a cero y uno a uno no le han quitado mérito al mundial. Para los amantes del fútbol un juego de empate puede ser mil veces más interesante que un juego en el cual uno de los equipos domina el encuentro totalmente. Solo hay que pensar en el partido entre Portugal y Corea. 

Si el balón influye en los resultados—algo que va a cambiar para la próxima copa--de todos modos es de celebrar que los equipos sudamericanos han aprendido con tanto éxito cómo controlarlo. El caso es que el juego europeo es más físico, los alemanes y los daneses son más altos. Los ingleses y los eslavos son más duros. La realidad es que el fútbol en este momento como en todas las épocas, lo dominan los que saben, los malabaristas que convierten cualquier jugada en un acto de magia e inspiración. Higuain, uno de los buenos de Argentina mide seis pies (metro ochenta), pero Lionel Massi a quien muchos juzgan como el mejor futbolista del mundo a los 23 años, mide solo 5 pies y 7 pulgadas (1,70 metros). Y ni Maradona ni Pelé son altos.

El 11 de julio vamos a saber quien se lleva la corona. Creemos que la final será entre Argentina y Brasil. Gane quien gane, ya tenemos un inventario de grandes momentos que vamos a revivir hasta el próximo mundial en Brasil
